Look Who's Training at the U!

Just another day at the McCarthey Family Track and Field on the University of Utah campus. We watched Olympian Galen Rupp and European Champion Mo Farah run a workout at our facility this morning. Their coach, Alberto Salazar, was also there leading the workout. Assistant Steve Magness was also present with the group as they are completing their final preparations for the US/UK Championships that occur later this summer.

Smarties!!!

Congratulations to our team on an outstanding spring semester academically. We had 16 team members make the Dean’s List (3.5 GPA with 12+ graded credit hours).

We also had 30 of our 41 team members with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. I am very proud of those of you who made such a great effort. The team top ten list was the most difficult to make in my 12 semesters as the head coach of this program.

Better Late than Never!!!

Sorry for the delay in reporting from the conference championships. Blogger website was down for a while and I couldn't post.

We had six all conference performances at the outdoor championship meet including three runner up finishes and three third place finishes.

Alyssa Abbott (1500), Bree LeRoy (Heptathlon), and Angie Kaplar (100m hurdles) were all second place finishers. Amanda Mergaert (1500), Anneli Stahl (hammer), and Langley Iverson (high jump) were third.

LeRoy (pictured above with American Great Lolo Jones) totaled 18.5 team points as she scored in all five events she competed in (Hept, LJ, HJ, Jav, and 100m hurdles). Mergaert complete a tough 1500/800 double by finishing 5th in the latter event.

Overall, our team competed hard. Several underclassmen continued to gain experience at a high level meet. We will have seven athletes who will move on to the West Region First Round of the NCAA Championships. First and Second round competition for the West region will begin on May 26th in Eugene, OR at Historic Hayward Field.

Ka-Boom

In the words of an old friend (Gary Rima)...Ka-boom! Our final regular season meet produced some terrific performances including another school record and several PR's. Sophomore Angie Kaplar broke her own school record by .22 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles as she place a close second place in 13.61. That time should ensure her a spot at the NCAA First Round meet in Eugene next month.

Junior Bree LeRoy (pictured) continued her outstanding season with a new personal best in the long jump (19-8.25). This was a full foot lifetime best.

Junior Langley Iverson had another solid performance. While she only cleared 5-7.25, her succeeding jumps look as good as they have all year.

The throwers had a solid day as well. Nikkie Rudder was second in the shot put (46-10.25). Destanae Howerton-Davis had a huge lifetime best (45-2.5) to finish third. In the discus Howerton-Davis was third (138-10.25). Anneli Stahl threw the hammer 175-3.25 to finish second.

Sophomore Theresa Waybright got her season turned around with her first clearance over 12 feet this year.

I thought we performed well for the most part. We have some injury issues that have taken their toll on our sprinters. Hopefully, the weekend off will help them as we get ready to enter the championship season.
