Sophomore Bree Leroy finished her first MWC heptathlon with 4670 points which was good for 5th place overall. We knew the battle for 3rd through 5th would be very tight. Bree was only 39 points from fourth and 146 points from third. She will be the first to tell you that she left those points on the track today. More importantly (from my viewpoint) is she refuses to give excuses. This was her first conference outdoor meet and ultimately she tried to hard in a couple of events (javelin and 800m). It wasn't a lack of effort physically. She just tried to be too perfect. She will learn from this because she wants to improve and be an elite multi eventer in our league and nationally. In the grand scheme of things she had less than a perfect meet and still PR'd by roughly 400 points!!! She PR'd in three events and was just shy of her lifetime best mark in two other events.
As a team we are to a solid start, but the team race will be very close in terms of finishing in the upper half or the lower half of the league. It's all about who wants it more. It's all about who can relax and turn the pressure of this meet into opportunities for success. Most of that will take place mentally. Who can get to the start line without losing energy from thinking about the competition?
This team is close and believes in each other. They have to keep fighting for each other and competing for every point in order to reach individual and team goals. That will be our focus over the next two days.
